Faith & Works FAQ

Question:

The passages on baptism you quote just speak of Holy Spirit baptism.

Answer:

The discussion of who is baptized by the Holy Spirit can become quite long and draw us away from our focus here: how to be saved. Thus, I'll only make a few comments here.

  1. No one was ever commanded to be baptized by the Spirit. The baptism of the Spirit came from God, no one can make that happen. Hence, Peter commanding people to be baptized in Acts 2:38 would be silly, if not blasphemy.
  2. The context of 1 Peter 3:21 is the flood and Noah. Just read verse 20. The verses there have water everywhere in them. To argue that verse is speaking of the Spirit's baptism is impossible, if not foolish.

Much more could be said but it is apparent that the plain teaching of scripture about baptism cannot be dismissed in this way.
