The Bible and Human Cloning
by Mark RobertsSix years ago I wrote the article below, after Dolly was cloned in Scotland. Many people thought the Bible had nothing to say about cloning but such was dead wrong. Via powerful principles the Bible addresses all of life, even complex genetic engineering questions.
Today there is more concern than ever about human cloning due to Clonaid's announcement last week that they have actually done it. It should be pointed out that no evidence for a successful human cloning was submitted at Clonaid's announcement and the scientific community is extremely skeptical about their claims. Christians can only hope that they are just seeking media attention and haven't actually violated FDA regulations and God's law by participating in human experimentation and cloning experiments.
As an added note, the scientific community is right to be skeptical about Clonaid's claims. Human cloning appears to be very difficult, if not impossible. While understanding that humans are not descendant from apes, there are some similarities in humans and monkeys. Thus we follow attempts to clone monkeys with great interest. At the Oregon Primate Research Center, Dr. Dominko, a principal researcher, spent three years and made more than 300 attempts to clone a monkey to absolutely no avail. She never got a single pregnancy. Instead she got grotesquely abnormal embryos, that she called a ""gallery of horrors.""1 Can anyone imagine a gallery of horrors with human embryos? God forbid!
Our world changes at bewildering speed sometimes, with new ideas and new technologies blossoming all around us. Yet the Word of God continues to be our North Star, our reference point of absolute certainty at all times. May the material contained here help you navigate the sea of questions human cloning generates.
