What About Homosexuality?
Mark Roberts
In less than twenty five years homosexuality has gone from being a complete non-issue to something a few whispered about to a topic of concern in a few areas of the country to a nationwide, full-blown, social revolution. How has this happened? I truly cannot think of any sin that has so quickly managed to shed its vile and repulsive image and insert itself into our world as normal and acceptable. It is incredible and it has happened right before our eyes! What has happened?
While realizing that much needs to be said about how the relatively small numbers of homosexuals in America have successfully commandeered the media in our society, relentlessly pumping out pro-homosexual propaganda, other minority groups have tried the same tactics and failed miserably. Our focus instead needs to be on changing attitudes toward sexual activity and changing attitudes toward the Bible. Consider how much our world has changed in these two areas in the last twenty or thirty years:
For example, in a world that saw the sexual revolution of the 1960’s result in promiscuity, abortion, divorce and teen fornication (all celebrated in movies, song and television) is it any surprise that other aspects of sexuality would eventually also be “liberated?” America today seem obsessed with sex and that obsession has led to every kind of perversion, even perversion previously unimaginable. Homosexuality is just part of that sad picture.
Even sadder, is America’s loss of faith in the Bible as a moral guidebook. Americans now look internally, not externally, for guidance. Whatever my heart says is right is right to me. Yet the heart is not a good guide for any one because the heart is not governed by thought or intellect. The heart is influenced by what it sees. So if I see a “loving” homosexual couple wanting to get married my heart may be moved to redefine marriage. Televison plays a role in this, as what it shows us, what we see, becomes the basis for what our hearts believe. The Bible stringently warns us that the heart is deceitful (Jer. 17:9) and that we should not follow our internal leading (Jer. 10:23), yet for millions what they feel inside is their only guide.
If the tide of homosexuality and sexual perversion is to be reversed in our country inroads will have to be made in both of these areas. People must be taught God’s plan for the sexual relationship. People must be taught to respect and value God’s word. Towards that end we offer this issue of Abundant Life. Each of our writers has carefully considered aspects of homosexuality that need to be addressed so that people can know what is right and do what is right. We hope and pray that you will not only find this material personally profitable but will share it with others as well.
